August Strindberg lived from 1849 to 1912 and was a Swedish writer, painter, and playwright. He is arguably one of the most influential writers from Scandinavia and also one of the fathers of modern theatre. In fact, he was part of the realistic movement and wrote several plays therein; but then he switched over to the rivaling movement of non-realism or expressionism and wrote his later works under that regime.
Strindberg pulled from his past experiences and family members when he wrote, however some biographers say not to rely on his works as true accounts of reality, as he was particularly gifted at twisting the truth. His father was a shipping agent, and he refers to his mother as a “servant girl.” He grew up in Stockholm (the present day capital of Sweden located on the eastern coast) and attended elementary school in parishes and graduated from a prestigious middle-class school for boys.
His biography describes a severely indecisive neurotic man. During his “college years” his interests ranged from chemistry to literature to teaching to medicine to playwrighting and to journalism. He did not graduate. He also married three times and had children by each wife. Some scholars say this was due to his personal views society’s traditional gender roles, which he often critiqued in his earlier writings.
His best know plays were Miss Julie (Fröken Julie), The Dance of Death (Dödsdansen), A Dream Play (Ett drömspel) and The Ghost Sonata (Spöksonaten). Miss Julie is about the difference in the lower and higher classes shown through a sort of love story. He critiques the higher classes for belittling their servants as emotionless and unimportant - and the servants for their mindless involvement in keeping those stereotypes in place. In A Dream Play, Strindberg uses symbolism and expressionism to depict the seemingly logical but disjointed characteristics of a dream. The play is about the daughter of a Vedic god that has come to earth to experience all of life’s problems. She encounters highly symbolic characters that ultimately show her life is pitiful.
Strindberg died of cancer in 1912. He is survived by several statues and busts of his likeness in Stockholm.
